In this workshop we will explore the art of using abstraction to make your images stronger, more creative, and engaging. This interactive Zoom workshop is designed to provide you with a range of creative techniques and practical tips to elevate your photography. While the focus will be on street photography, the principles and techniques discussed are applicable to various genres.
Recommended prior knowledge
This workshop is suitable for both newer street photographers and those who have been shooting for a while and want to develop their skills further. No specific prior knowledge is required.
Course Outline
In this workshop, you will learn why abstraction is used in photography and how it can enhance your images. We will discuss reality anchors and their role in helping viewers interpret your work, as well as explore the concept of artistic intent. The workshop will examine the value of the curiosity gap in photography and teach you about 10 different forms of abstraction. Additionally, we will cover various ways to use each type of abstraction in your work, including in-camera techniques and simple post-processing methods to enhance abstract elements.
Outcomes
By the end of this workshop, you will have a comprehensive understanding of how to use abstraction to enhance your photographs. You will learn various in-camera and post-processing techniques to create abstract images. You will also understand the principles behind using abstraction to engage viewers and convey artistic intent.
You will need
- A camera; any type will suffice, but a DSLR or mirrorless camera is recommended.
- A stable internet connection to participate in the Zoom workshop.
- Basic photo editing software is required for the post-processing techniques.
- You will need an open mind and readiness to experiment with new techniques.

About the Tutor:
Simon Ellingworth is a multi award winning Fine Art Street Photographer.
Simon has featured in the ‘International Photography Awards‘, was a finalist in the ‘International iPhone Photography Awards‘, ‘Mobile Photography Awards‘ & ‘Professional Photographer of the Year‘, previously runner up in ‘Professional Photographer of the Year‘ and ‘Sony World Photography Awards‘. Simon’s tutorials have been published by a number of blogs including Lifehacker, Life in Lofi, SLR Lounge. His limited edition Fine Art Street Photography prints are sold globally by Saatchi galleries and more.
Simon is a passionate educator, a lover of simplicity on both gear and technique and welcomes photographs of all abilities and with cameras from iPhones, mirrorless to DSLRs. He is super welcoming, inclusive and very enthusiastic.
