Join multi-award-winning photographer Simon Ellingworth for a comprehensive workshop on available light portraiture. This session online course, limited to 10 participants, will be held over three evenings. Gain insights into visual literacy, posing real people, approaching strangers, utilizing available light, and developing more meaningful portraits.

Recommended prior knowledge

No prior knowledge is necessary. This course is suitable for all levels, but participants should have a basic understanding of how to operate their camera and some familiarity with online learning platforms.

Course Outline

Week 1: / Session 1 – September 5

In the first session, we will discuss what portraiture is and explore several portraits in depth to draw out important learning points. We will focus on developing your vision and understanding viewer psychology.

Week 2: / Session 2 – September 12

In the second session, we will consider what you are trying to say with your portraits and how to effectively convey it. We will cover techniques for shooting total strangers in the street and provide tips and tricks for communicating with and directing your subject. After this session, you will arrange a portrait session with a friend and upload your favorite five images before the next meeting.

Week 3: / Session 3 – October 17

The final session will be dedicated to providing feedback on up to five images from your personal portrait session. This will help you refine your skills and improve your portraiture.

Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, you will have developed visual literacy and learned how to convey your message through portraiture. You will gain confidence in posing real people and approaching strangers for street portraits. You will also learn how to effectively use available light for portrait photography and receive personalized feedback to improve your skills.

  • Willingness to participate and share your work

About the Tutor:

Simon Ellingworth is a multi award winning Fine Art Street Photographer.

Simon has featured in the ‘International Photography Awards‘, was a finalist in the ‘International iPhone Photography Awards‘, ‘Mobile Photography Awards‘ & ‘Professional Photographer of the Year‘, previously runner up in ‘Professional Photographer of the Year‘ and ‘Sony World Photography Awards‘. Simon’s tutorials have been published by a number of blogs including Lifehacker, Life in Lofi, SLR Lounge. His limited edition Fine Art Street Photography prints are sold globally by Saatchi galleries and more.

Simon is a passionate educator, a lover of simplicity on both gear and technique and welcomes photographs of all abilities and with cameras from iPhones, mirrorless to DSLRs. He is super welcoming, inclusive and very enthusiastic.

Please inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a course as it is not possible to refund any cancellation or transfer to another workshop less than 14 days prior to course start date. The Society reserves the right to cancel a workshop 7 days prior to its start date – please check your hotel and travel cancellation policy as this may be affected.
